Description

Loctite 401 is a one-part ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive that cures with atmospheric humidity and needs no mixing. Henkel gives fixture times under 5 seconds on steel, aluminium, ABS and nitrile rubber, a cone-and-plate viscosity of 70 to 110 mPa·s, and lap shear strength of 20 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel after 72 hours at 22°C.

The manufacturer describes it for assembling difficult-to-bond materials that need uniform stress distribution and strong tension or shear strength, covering metals, plastics and elastomers as well as porous wood, paper, leather and fabric.

At 22°C and 50% relative humidity Henkel lists fixture under 5 seconds on steel, aluminium, ABS, PVC and nitrile rubber, and 5 to 10 seconds on polycarbonate. Full chemical and solvent resistance develops over at least 24 hours.

Does Loctite 401 need an activator?

No. It cures from surface moisture. Henkel notes an activator can speed curing where large gaps make it slow, but this can reduce ultimate bond strength, so testing is recommended.
