The Smart Zapper is a microprocessor-based evolution of Eaton's Zapper chip-detection system, used for early failure detection in helicopter gearboxes and transmissions. Chip detectors sense ferrous wear debris in the lubricating oil and signal a power module, which fires a controlled low-energy pulse to burn off insignificant particles while flagging larger or growing debris accumulations that could indicate an impending gearbox failure. Its programmability lets operators tailor the burn-off energy profile, pulse count, and timing per detector location.
