Description
RTV142 is a one-component silicone paste that cures at room temperature by an alkoxy mechanism on exposure to atmospheric moisture. Alkoxy cure releases alcohol rather than acid, so it is the usual choice for bonding and sealing near sensitive metals, plated contacts and electronic components that would be attacked by an acid-cure silicone. Its thixotropic consistency holds a bead on vertical surfaces without slumping, and it is specified as a low-outgassing grade for vacuum and enclosed-electronics work.

What is the practical advantage of alkoxy cure over an acetoxy silicone here?
Acetoxy grades release acetic acid as they cure, which can corrode copper, brass and some plated finishes and leave a residue inside sealed boxes. RTV142's alkoxy cure gives a non-corrosive cure profile, which is why it is used directly on electronic hardware and instrument assemblies; the trade-off is that alkoxy grades generally cure more slowly and are more sensitive to low humidity.
Is there a difference between the white and translucent versions?
They are the same one-component alkoxy chemistry differing in appearance. Choose white where you want the bead to be clearly visible for inspection or where you want an opaque finish, and translucent where you need to see the substrate or joint line through the cured material.
